Wheelin Sportsmen Catfish Roundup
CAROLINA CARPORTS, INC. Sponsors the 3rd Annual Yadkin Valley Wheelin' Sportsmen's Catfish Round-Up at Shelton Vineyards.
Saturday, June 14, 2008 provided a chance for local disabled or handicapped residents and their families to enjoy a full day of fishing on the grounds of Shelton Vineyards near Dobson. Participants, their families and volunteers were treated to free hot dogs, hamburgers and cold beverages, as well as music from a variety of acts spanning from blues to bluegrass. The participants were served more than 300 hamburgers and approximately 400 hot dogs throughout the day. With over 500 people in attendance, Carolina Carports, Inc. enlightens the smiles of everyone with balloons, hats, candy and misc. items that were given away during the event.
A dramatic parachute entrance by former Golden Knight and double amputee Dana Bowman, a retired Army sergeant, flew the American flag in honor of the participants and American soldiers past and present. Internationally recognized vocalist, Melva Houston performed the national anthem during Bowman's descent from the sky.
The Wheelin' Sportsmen is an outreach program of the National Wild Turkey Federation, the largest conservation organization in North America, with more than 2,500 chapters and 500,000 members. Friday the group held its annual fundraiser banquet at the Mount Airy Elks Lodge. The event was open to the public at a $20 admission price that included the meal and chances on door prizes. The evening included a variety of games for opportunities to win guns or other merchandise, along with auctions and raffles. In the past, such items as four-wheelers and limited-edition prints from the National Wild Turkey Federation have been raffled. Carolina Carports, Inc. participated for the 3rd consecutive year with a monetary donation to assist with sponsoring this event. The group brought in over $40,000 for this year’s event.
However the real focus of the Catfish Round-Up was the fun experienced by the local disabled or handicapped residents who participated in the Catfish Round. Carolina Carports, Inc. counts their involvement with the event as one of the most rewarding experiences, as it represents a great opportunity to give back to the community.
